Psalm 72 and Being Brave
On the 329th day of 2018, we started the day at Church (of course, it's Sunday!). And, on 11/25/18 (hey, one month to Christmas!), I was the lector, reading the day's scriptures. One of them this morning, was Psalm 72. To me, this Psalm is about our desires for future (and dare I say current) leaders of the world. It implores God to give them wisdom and grace to know and to do their duty. And these verses stuck out to me:
May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
the hills the fruit of righteousness.
May he defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy.
As I was reading, I could not help think about the leadership of our country these days. And the demonization of the migrants that are trying to seek asylum in the US, fleeing violence and oppression in their home countries. And, in response, many of our leaders are turning a blind eye and figuring out ways to prevent their entry to this country. This breaks my heart. Things have to change and, as I sat in the pews, I prayed that they will. It's going to take some brave leaders, hopefully in the new Congress, to put our country back on the right path. The path where we care for others and we figure out ways for asylum seekers to have quick evaluations and legally enter our country. I am, admittedly, not certain of the best solution, but I know closing intake points of entry and firing tear gas at children is certainly NOT the answer. SO, for the number of the day, I pick 72, for I hope that our leaders can be affected by its words and, for a song, I am picking a song about being brave.
