I'll Remember (1,196,554 lives lost in battle)
It's the 148th day of 2018 and 5/28/18 is Memorial Day. We started the day at our town's Memorial Day remembrance ceremony which was poignant and somber. I, personally, do not know of any friends or family who have lost their lives overseas, but I DO know that I have friends and family who have served and I am certain they are aware of their colleagues who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I also know that, in this day and age, patriotism is a hot button topic and those of us who are not happy with the state of affairs in DC often have our patriotism questioned. This has happened to me this weekend in discussions about politics, about the NFL's new anthem policy, and about gun control. But, on a discussion page I am on, the best way to address this was as one of the posters stated:
"The incredible sacrifices made across our history in the World Wars and all the way back are
of so many people who saw freedom as something for which we must put our lives on the line.
We can never be thankful enough for any person who laid down their life for another. This
should not keep us from examining the causes and effects of wars, though, and the places where
we might find better solutions that lead to peace and safety and true quality of life for all
people. I am not smart enough or well informed enough to know all the answers. But I believe
we can all ask questions and stay aware of misguided or immoral purposes, and make an effort
to not add more names to those we remember who have laid down their lives."
So, I leave you, today, with these words (with which I agree) and I honor the number 1,196,554 which is the estimated number of Americans who have died in battle (from the American Revolution all the way to the current "War" on Terror). And, although not written with Memorial Day in mind, the song is Madonna's I'll Remember. I am remembering today....as well as hoping for better days ahead so there can be more peace and fewer lives lost, not only on the battlefield, but across the world in all arenas.
